Alaska is nothing short of stunning in the winter time. Travelers looking to bask in white mountain peaks and snow packed valleys, or activities such as world-class skiing, snow boarding, snow machining, dog mushing, northern lights viewing, wildlife viewing or winter carnivals, Alaska provides a setting for the perfect winter destination.

The Nenana Ice Classic is the Alaska version of a state lottery. At $2.00 per ticket, Alaskans indicate the date and time they think the ice will move on the Tanana River. When the ice breaks and the tripod moves downstream, it trips a mechanism indicating the exact time. The closest time wins a pot usually in excess of $70,000.

Alyeska Resort is located in Girdwood, a small, mountain community at mile 37 off the Seward Highway. This world-class Ski Resort is tucked amid a gorgeous glacier valley. Mt. Alyeska visitors can journey 2,300 feet above the valley floor aboard the Alyeska Tramway for a bird’s eye view of surrounding glaciers and the beautiful Turnagain Arm. Alyeska Prince Hotel, Alaska’s premier year-round destination resort, offers 307 guest rooms, impeccable service, 7 restaurants, 3 lounges, mountain top dining, world-class skiing and snowboarding, state of the art meeting facilities and much more. Alyeska Ski Resort offers the finest downhill skiing in the state. For more information contact www.alyeskaresort.com.

The northern lights natural phenomenon is both amazing and mysterious. If a visitor happens to find themselves in northern latitudes on a clear, dark night, chances are they will find that the stars are not the only attraction. Colors can range from green to red to purple, with the brightest and most common color, a yellow-green. Intensity varies from night to night, often the best shows are late evening to wee hours in the morning. Hotels in Fairbanks and Barrow are known to provide wake-up calls at anytime for northern lights viewing.
