Vibrant Culture and diversity are some of Sitka’s trademarks. The
Tlingits have lived continuously in Sitka for over 50 centuries.
Totemic designs are found in the artwork throughout the town, as
well as in local museums and galleries. A local favorite “Totem
Park” is where stories are told of the Native peoples’ triumphs
and transgressions by carvings done by the masterful hands of the
Tlingets and Haida Indians. Enjoy year-round wildlife viewing opportunities,
sea lions, harbor seals, playful sea otters, and seabird stocked
rookeries can be accessed by ocean-going charters and tours. Whales
can often be seen year-round while out in the ocean, humpbacks practically
park themselves in front of Sitka’s harbor in the fall and early
winter. Situated on a high overlook just six miles from downtown,
Whale Park offers visitors a great opportunity to view these great
giants of the Pacific. Sitka has over 200 hotel rooms, attractive
bed and breakfasts and lodges, as well as several campgrounds and
RV facilities. An array of dining styles and meals are available
for your eating pleasure. Enticing shops and galleries carry unique
items to fit a variety of budgets: traditional Tlingit designs in
silver, totem poles, woven baskets, carving, and more.
