Seward
Seward faces a beautiful deep blue bay and displays the perfect back
drop of snow capped mountain peaks. Once known primarily as the southern
terminus of the Alaska Railroad transferring thousands of prospectors
and miners, today this town is a thriving tourist destination. The
Kenai Fjords National Park Visitor Center is located along the boardwalk
in the small boat harbor. Other attractions include: glacier tours,
fishing and the Alaska SeaLife Center with up-close viewing of marine
mammals and sea birds.
Getting to Seward is an enjoyable adventure all by itself. Whether
you drive, fly or travel by train, this wonderful community is a must-see
destination! The town’s biggest events are the Mount Marothon race,
straight up the side of a mountain overlooking the picuresque area
of Seward, and the Seward Silver Salmon Derby. This area has also
built a reputation as a halibut hot spot and explodes with energy
every year during the 4th of July!

Each year an estimated 30,000 people flock to Seward to witness runners
tackle the humbling 3,022-foot race up and down Mount Marathon. Spectators
have full view of the runners from the beginning of the race on paved
road, up steep rocky mountain side to remaining snowfields near the
top of the mountain, and as they round the 3-mile looped trail back
to their starting point. This race is often muddy and treacherous
and is a real crowd pleaser. The run is accompanied by a street fair,
softball tourney, barbecues, live music, food booths, lots of old-fashioned
games and of course a small-town USA parade.

boasts halibut that weigh, on average, 50 to 80 pounds. The
big ones, sometimes called barn doors, can tip the scales at
more than 300 pounds! |
