Nome

Discover “Far North Alaska” by visiting destinations such as Nome, Barrow and Coldfoot. Far North Alaska is land where legends are passed from generation to generation filled with rich history and natural wonders. Modern industry now co-exists with wildlife and traditional subsistence lifestyles. This is one of Alaska’s most diverse regions featuring cultural opportunities and beautiful landscape, all accessible via air from Fairbanks and Anchorage.

In Nome visitors find a variety of opportunities. At the turn of the century, prospectors sifted $3 million in gold from Nome’s sandy beaches. Today, visitors are able to learn how to pan for gold, explore abandoned dredges and participate in sled dog demonstrations. Nome’s most exciting annual event is the Iditarod, “The Last Great Race on Earth”. This 1,049 mile sled dog race from Anchorage to Nome starts the first Saturday in March each year. History notes, this race commemorates efforts to deliver life-saving serum during a diphtheria epidemic in 1925.

For many visitors, crossing the Arctic Circle is the most memorable moment of their Alaska journey. Barrow, the northern most settlement in America, is often referred to as the “Top of the World”, and is one of the largest Eskimo communities in Alaska. The summer sun doesn’t set for 82 days, shining from May 10th to August 2nd. In April and May, visitors can see Eskimos heading for whaling camps. Subsistence activities still play an important role in this arctic community. Barrow offers year-round visitor experiences featuring everything from cultural tours to northern lights tours in the winter to polar bear viewing.
