Kennicott,
McCarthy,Wrangell-St. Elias National Park

Kennicott is located in the heart of the Wrangell-St.
Elias National Park. This park, conjoined with its neighbor in the
Yukon, Kluane National Park form the largest parkland on the planet.
Together, these two sprawling parks protect over 19 million acres.
Dramatic mountains offer valuable minerals in the rock surface, including
copper, gold and silver. In the early part of the century the Kennicott
Mining Company operated a highly productive copper mine. Now a ghost
town and placed on the National Register of Historic Places-Kennicott
remains a major attraction of Wrangell-St. Elias.
Around the year 1900, prospectors spotted a patch of green hillside,
which seemed to be perfect grazing ground for their pack horses. The
grass turned out to be the green glint of copper ore. A boom town
was born with approximately 800 workers calling Kennicott their home.
Within 20 years the strike proved to be the richest known concentration
of copper ore in the world. By the 1930’s the high-grade ore played
out, and when the Kennecott Copper Corporation moved out, Kennicott
became a ghost town overnight.
To reach the Kennicott Glacier Lodge and Ghost Town, take the Edgerton
Highway and McCarthy Road, a 93-mile paved/gravel route, to the historical
mining town of McCarthy. At the end of the road a footbridge separates
the road from the wilderness. Transfers are
offered to visitors from the other side of the footbridge, through
McCarthy, 5 miles up the road to Kennicott. By air, a charter flight
will land visitors at the 3000’ McCarthy airport where they are met
and transferred to the Kennicott Glacier Lodge.Flightseeing tours
are very popular, as well as hiking, glacier hiking, camping, and
photography. Mountain trails can be explored near famous mines with
names like Bonanza, Jumbo, and Mother Lode. After the Kennicott experience,
discover more about this historic mining area by visiting the museum
in nearby McCarthy.
