Juneau

Alaska’s Capital, displayed along the Gastineau Channel waterway and tucked at the foot of Mt. Juneau, is an outdoor lover’s paradise. Familiar in Juneau are homes perched above the city, blessed with gorgeous mountain and waterway views, and locals waving hello and nodding to each other while moving along through their day. Although this city retains a small town atmosphere, it is a cosmopolitan community complete with high rise buildings, cultural facilities, legislative assembly chambers, even shopping malls. Most of the reason Juneau remains so beautiful is the way nature and human culture seem to integrate.

For more area information contact Juneau Convention & Visitors Bureau www.traveljuneau.com or call (907)586-1737.

Population in Juneau is just over 30,000 people. Note! Over 632,000 people visited Juneau in the summer of 2000!

Some will say you can’t drive to Juneau. But like many other communities along Alaskan’s southeast coastline, Juneau has a floating roadway, the Alaska Marine Highway. The Alaska Marine Highway ferry system, recently named one of America’s Scenic Byways, offers convenient and reliable service from where the “road” ends and land begins.

Juneau is home to one of Alaska’s finest hiking trail systems. There are over 100 miles of groomed trails in the area to explore. Trails range from very easy to challenging. Because Juneau is in the middle of the northernmost rainforest in the world, this area offers some of the most fulfilling views and adventure experiences anywhere.

A complete guide book of the Juneau trail system is available. Mountain biking and rentals are also available with local tour companies.

Juneau and its surrounding mountains, valleys, beaches and waterways has some of the most spectacular wildlife viewing. Just minutes away are prime viewing opportunities of brown bear, whales and eagles. Juneau has a variety of wildlife tours that can get you up close to black bear, mountain goats, Sitka black tail deer, Dall porpoise, sea lions, harbor seals and sea otters. If you are more interested in what’s under the water, there are great diving opportunities to be enjoyed year-round. Abundant marine life will be encountered on almost every dive.

Nothing beats a birds-eye view of Juneau’s scenery. Fixed wing flightseeing companies offer float plane and wheel plane tours of the Icefields. Helicopter flightseeing companies offer both aerial tours and the chance to land right on the ice. Once on the ice you can go on an extended hike or enjoy a dog sled tour (in the middle of summer!). For those not inclined to go for a flight, a breathtaking view of Juneau from above can be accomplished by taking the Mt. Roberts Tram from near sea level to the mid-point of Mt. Roberts, 2,000 feet high.

Juneau’s most popular attraction is the mighty Mendenhall Glacier, located just 13 miles from downtown Juneau, the Mendenhall is massive: 100 feet tall and 1.5 miles wide, its length is over 6 miles. Visitors wanting to experience glaciers have a multitude of options. Ground Tour companies offer trips to the Mendenhall Glacier where the Forest Service operates a fine walk-up visitors center. The Mendenhall River, which flows off the lake in front of the Mendenhall Glacier, offers class 2-3 rafting. Tour companies offer both ride-along trips down the river (in which everyone gets to take part in maneuvering the raft down the river).

Located 37 miles west of Juneau, and accessible via a scenic three-hour ferry ride or a 13-minute flight, the homestead community of Gustavus is the entry point for Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve. Gustavus is famous for its incredible country inns and lodges, all of which offer high levels of personal service and outstanding gourmet meals. There are opportunities to take a day cruise into Glacier Bay National Park, fish or watch whales at Point Adolphus. Mountain bike, sea kayaking and camping adventures are also available.
