Homer

Homer is a small, coastal community on the shores of Kachemak Bay, located southwest on the Kenai peninsula where Cook Inlet meets the Gulf of Alaska. Just a 45 minute flight by commercial carrier or a 4-5 hour spectacular drive from Anchorage; arrival by any mode reminds the visitor of Alaska’s grand presence.

Homer’s superb location is apparent when driving high along a bluff offering sweeping views of Kachemak Bay, the town of Homer and the Homer Spit. The Homer Spit, a defining feature of the area, runs four miles into Kachemak Bay. The Spit is one of Alaska’s most charming aspects, this area is bustling with visitors, local artists, gift stores, galleries, fishing charters, day tour options, the boat harbor and camping. There is an immediate shift in atmosphere when entering this four mile strip, it becomes a gathering place and is an on-going daily Alaska celebration for locals and visitors alike.

Homer’s Population has grown beyond 4,100 but the city serves as a trading and service center for about 13,000. The city has a modern hospital, several newspapers, a branch campus of the University of Alaska Anchorage, public and commercial radio stations, a movie theatre, flourishing commercial and sport fishing fleets, and a high school considered one of the best in the nation.

One of the best things about the Homer area is it’s availability to total wilderness. Bears, wolves, and moose meander the highlands, and hundreds of thousands of birds of different species assemble each spring to feed on the mudflats at the head of the bay.

Summer or winter, there is no end to interesting activities, challenging sports and breathtaking scenery to enjoy around Homer.

Until the early 1950’s, Homer was accessible only by boat and plane, or by driving the sand and gravel beach from Kenai.

Fishing

Homer has a reputation for excellent King Salmon fishing almost all year long, which in turn has sparked several winter King Salmon derbies. Also, world famous for their halibut, which can exceed 300 pounds, Homer celebrates the Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby that runs from May 1st through Labor Day every year. Multiple prizes are given out for the largest halibut caught each month, and sometimes even releasing halibut that are over 80 pounds.

One of the best places to fish on the lower Kenai Peninsula is the Homer Spit, a tiny bay known as the “Fishing Hole” has been loaded with King and Silver Salmon, providing easy-access angling from Mid-May through Mid-September. There are a lot of different species of fish you can hook while in Homer such as; Steelhead, Dolly Varden, Silver Salmon, Irish Lord, and many more. As you land your trophy, you may also have the pleasure of seeing whales, otters, seals, ducks, seabirds, as well as mountains, volcanoes and glaciers.
