Haines

Nestled in the forests of southeast Alaska, encircled by soaring peaks,
incredible glaciers, and elegant rivers, Haines offers unlimited opportunity
for outdoor recreation and relaxation.
Haines’ activity calendar is packed full of action year-round. Festivals,
a bike race, the Southeast Alaska State Fair in August, rafting, and
canoeing are just a few of the countless activities throughout the
year. Most evenings during the summer, you can feast at a salmon bake
and enjoy a captivating performance by native dancers.
The scenic streets of Haines are never over-crowded, yet they offer
everything you’ll need while visiting or on the road: lodging, private
campgrounds and RV parks, restaurants, grocery stores and hardware
stores, gas stations, galleries, gift shops, and clothing stores.

 |
William
H. Seward who arranged Alaska’s purchase from Russia in 1867,
is also considered Haines’ first real tourist after he visited
to view an eclipse in 1869. |
Haines entered modern history in World War II. This is the time
when engineers built a road from the quiet little port to the Alaska
Highway. Haines has an interesting history. In 1902, an ongoing
border dispute between the U.S and Canada started the construction
of Fort William H. Seward, the first permanent army post in Alaska.
The result was impressive. Officers’ quarters were built with ornate
Victorian fireplaces, cabinets, doors, and windows. The homes along
the top of the fort included Officers’ Row; here captains, lieutenants,
and their families lived. What is now the Hotel Halsingland, once
was the Bachelor Officers’ Quarters and Captains’ Quarters. The
Main building of the hotel was the commanding Officers’ Quarters.
When the fort was decommissioned in 1947, it was bought by a group
of war veterans with hope of creating a utopian arts and commerce
community. Today the fort has numerous hotels, restaurants art galleries,
and recreation sites.
For some, winter is the ultimate time to be in Haines. The season
starts with the annual visit of up to 3,500 Bald Eagles from October
through December. Photographers and nature lovers flock to the Chilkat
Valley to view the thousands of Eagles as they gather to feed on
the late run of salmon. January brings increased daylight, and snow
for outdoor activities such as dog mushing, snowmachining, and ice
climbing. At the end of the winter season, whether it is back country
or cross country, March and April’s spring skiing can’t be beat!Whatever
your passion is about Alaska, you’ll find it in Haines, the Alaska
of your dreams!
