Glacier Discovery Train with Float Tour

The Glacier Discovery train takes you to a wild and remote location only accessible by train. Deep in the heart of the Chugach Mountains and only a few hours from Anchorage is Spencer Glacier. The Alaska Railroad’s rail and float tour is a perfect outing for the whole family. Ride the rail to Spencer Glacier and steal away on a gentle float tour among the icebergs at Spencer Lake and then down the Placer River. Professional raft guides lead the trip. A picnic lunch, raincoat and rubber boots are provided. Remember to dress in warm layers as the water is cold and creates cooler temperatures on the water. Due to activity of the glacier and water levels, the course of the float trip is subject to change. Rafters will re-board the train following the float for a short ride to Portage. Passengers traveling to Girdwood or Anchorage will transfer to a motorcoach at Portage with arrival back in Anchorage at 6:45pm.

Alaska Railroad’s Glacier Discovery train takes you deep into the Chugach Mountains to an area only accessible by train. The Grandview Valley and historic “loop district” is an area of incredible scenic beauty, surrounded by alpine meadows, wildlife and a bounty of wildflowers. Enjoy great views of Trail, Bartlett and Spencer Glaciers. Dining service is available on the Glacier Discovery train. A National Park Ranger is onboard to give commentary on the flora and fauna of the area. This sightseeing tour includes one-way rail and a return to Anchorage by motorcoach from the Portage stop. The motorcoach will make a stop in Girdwood for passengers staying at Alyeska Resort. Motorcoach arrives in Anchorage at 6:45 pm.
