Anchorage

Welcoming visitors year-round, Anchorage is easily accessible from anywhere in the world, any time of the year. Every sense can be engaged exploring this colorful and diverse All-America City. A good portion of travelers begin their Alaska adventure here. Anchorage is a natural “hub” for visitors traveling to, in and around Alaska by air, land or sea. Anchorage is one of Alaska’s perfect platforms, staging everything from culture, fine dining to gorgeous scenery and wildlife viewing.

Anchorage, and surrounding community population is approximately 280,000, close to 50% of the entire Alaska state population!

Flowers, flowers everywhere! Visit any summer day and it will be apparent that Anchorage is truly a city of flowers. The city plants 461 flower beds and baskets with 76,000 plants at 81 sites. Local business owners and residents pump up the competition for the biggest and most colorful baskets and flower box displays.

Anchorage offers numerous opportunities for visitors to learn about Alaska’s Native culture. Visit the Anchorage Museum of History and Art in the heart of downtown Anchorage. And, just a 10-minute drive north of downtown on 26 wooded acres is the Alaska Native Heritage Center. This one-of-a-kind, interactive facility offers a glimpse at early Native life across the state.

Anchorage is picture perfect in the winter, blanketed with pristine white snow mid to late October through early April, the city sparkles and the air is fresh throughout clear, sunny days. Brilliant blue skies turn into bright starry nights – nature’s perfect backdrop for dancing northern lights. Snow laden evergreen branches and twinkling white lights dotting the bare limbs of city trees make Anchorage a living holiday card.

Anchorage is an award winning trail town! The Anchorage bowl offers 120 miles of paved, multi-use trails. Another 180 miles of wilderness trails are perfect for mountain biking, hiking and skiing.Anchorage's public transit system, stops conveniently near many trail heads, and most buses have racks to easily accommodate bicycles. Purchase a map of local hiking, biking and cross-country ski trails at Alaska Public Lands Information Center.

Fish On! Whether it’s a few hours or a few days, there’s plenty of fishing in and just outside of Anchorage. Bring gear or rent from a local sporting goods store. Guide services also provide gear and expertise for half-day or full-day fishing adventures.

Ship Creek, located in downtown, provides great salmon fishing and the ultimate in angling convenience. The Ship Creek King Salmon Derby in early June and the Anchorage Silver Salmon Derby in early August attract locals and visitors looking to hook a prize-winning fish. Around the city, numerous lakes are stocked with rainbow trout and fresh water salmon. Just a short drive south is Bird Creek, an excellent silver and pink salmon fishery. Drive north just 40 miles for great trout fishing.

Fishing is an option year-round. An auger and a pole can provide an afternoon of winter fun!

Performing Arts Center

Anchorage residents love the arts. The Performing Arts Center (PAC) hosts world-class dance companies, theatre groups, Broadway productions, comedy acts, and a variety of big name bands and numerous other music performers. Anchorage had a symphony before it had paved streets, and the PAC is home to the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra, as well as the Anchorage Opera. Local and traveling performing arts groups are also found on smaller stages throughout Anchorage, and it is not uncommon to find musicians jamming in local coffee shops and several restaurants.
