Alyeska
Girdwood Prince William Sound
Girdwood is a beautiful community located just outside of Anchorage,
and is home to the Alyeska Resort. Heading south from Anchorage, on
the Seward Highway, it is quickly recognized that this could be the
finest stretch of highway in Alaska. Named one of America’s Scenic
Byways, you will come across breath taking scenery, wildlife, glaciers
and depending on the season, fishing, skiing and ice climbing. Beluga
whales are often seen rolling in and out of the Cook Inlet. High above,
and sometimes roadside, Dall sheep nibble with their young ones. All
of the above can be experienced along just a 39 mile stretch of road
on the way to Girdwood from Anchorage.

Captain
Cook supposedly entered the Cook Inlet only to find that the
inlet did not connect to Prince William Sound. He was forced
to turn around, therefore, the area is known as Turnagain Arm. |
Along the Seward Highway avid or recreational birdwatchers
should pause to visit the Anchorage Coastal Wildlife Refuge at Potter
Marsh. A 2,300 acre wetland, with interpretive displays of animal
and plant life, makes this a favorite spot to stroll. When the salmon
are running, peek over the walking bridge, and watch them swim under
your feet as they enter the refuge from Turnagain Arm.
