Alaska
Adventure Tours
Imagine sea kayaking quietly with whales and marine life, rafting
on great ribbons of glacial waters through the world’s highest coastal
mountains, canoeing silently along rivers where caribou, bear and
musk ox gather, or photographing grizzly bears in the wild. Alaska
is vast and beautiful. Its magic can only be discovered through direct
experience. Alaska Discovery has assembled an outstanding team of
guides to take you on an unforgettable adventure. Choose from the
following wilderness camping or lodge-based explorations or discover
more options online at www.akdiscovery.com
Whales of Point Adolphus
ALASKA DISCOVERY
Join us on this exciting camping and sea kayaking trip. We will spend
two full days and nights at Alaska’s most famous humpback whale feeding
area. Days are spent kayaking and watching for humpback whales, orca,
sea lions, eagles, and sea birds, hiking the beaches, or exploring
the old-growth rainforest of Chichagof Island. At night, fall asleep
under the canopy of the Tongass National Forest listening to the blows
of whales frolicking offshore. This is a great trip for families with
teenagers or anyone who wants to combine a genuine wilderness adventure
with other explorations of Alaska. Begins and ends in Gustavus. We
highly recommend you stay at the Alaska Discovery Inn the night before
your trip departs. It is the most convenient place to stay as there
will be an early pre-trip meeting at the inn on the morning your trip
departs.
Glacier Bay Expedition
ALASKA DISCOVERY
This sea kayak adventure explores the entire length of Glacier Bay
National Park’s tranquil East Arm, including several days spent intimately
experiencing famous Muir Inlet with its gorgeous McBride and Riggs
Glaciers. It is our most comprehensive paddling trip. In just one
week we can observe the complete ecological process from densely vegetated
lush rainforest to newly exposed rock. Paddling between huge icebergs
in front of a towering glacier face is an unforgettable experience.
It’s the best way to see Glacier Bay! We will also fly over the Bay
in a floatplane, which gives us a bird’s eye view of this World Heritage
site. When we aren’t paddling, there will be opportunities to beachcomb,
hike, and observe and photograph birds, marine mammals, and other
wildlife. We hope to see both black and brown (grizzly) bears. We’ll
move camp most days, although we may be able to spend two nights at
one location to permit a full day of rest and relaxation, or an optional
hike. Explorations on foot give us another wondrous view of this elaborate
ecosystem. This is one of our most popular and active trips where
expectations are exceeded and abilities are pushed. Begins and ends
in Gustavus.
Pack Creek Bears
Your pulse will race the first time you see a bear in the wild. Even
veteran Alaskans are thrilled to be so safely close to bears at Pack
Creek. We have seen bears feeding, nursing, sleeping, playing, and
even charging each other.Pack Creek meets the ocean in a calm bay
of Admiralty Island National Monument. In 1945 Stan Price rescued
an orphan cub near his homestead at Pack Creek and developed a peaceful
co-existence with the bears. His legacy is The Stan Price Brown Bear
Sanctuary which allows bear viewing at extremely close range. These
are wild bears that have become accustomed to human presence. As they
fish in the rich salmon stream, we watch them interact with nature
in an intimate environment.Once you have camped under Admiralty Island’s
lush canopy, paddled sea kayaks along its shores, explored its ancient
forests, and watched its magnificent bears feasting on migrating salmon,
you will come to understand why this land was known to the native
Tlinget as Kootznoowoo - “Fortress of the Bears.”Due to limited permits
for the bear sanctuary, these trips fill early. Begins and ends in
Juneau.
